Some of you may have seen news articles about the lawsuit that lasted about 3(?) years. It finally went through in the last year where the court has ruled in favor of the dozen or so former employees of CDI. Now Chungdahm has to give the teachers benefits, such as holiday and severance pay, health insurance, and contribute to your pension.
Chungdahm argues that the teachers were independent contractors, as described in the contract, but previous rulings have found that this situation does not comply with labor law, as Chungdahm controlled the rules, place and hours of employment, and in some cases sponsored teachers’ employment visas. - Paul Kerry, The Korea Herald
So where does that leave you person who is looking to go to Korea?
Basically, you will be a full time salary worker. You have a set pay each month and you will be given all the benefits of being a full time worker. After 6 months you will then have a choice to become a contract worker with an hourly pay or continue as a salary worker.

Full time
- You get feedback from CCTV
- You must attend meetings
- You do extra work
- You have 120 technical work hours
- You have more opportunity for growth
Contract
- You don't get feedback cause no one can watch your CCTV
- You can have side jobs
- You don't get e-mail from your boss
- You can be fired more easily
There are of course many details that I can not disclose since I have signed some papers and would like to keep my job. There has been a huge shift in the company but there seems to be one every year so I expect the company to continue rolling along.
One Year Later...
Company is still rolling along but there have been many changes. These may just be in my branch so the other places may be more strict or more lax.
Past - 2014
- Team Leader: Watched 5 other teachers, compensated with 500,000 won a month
- Hours: 8 classes, Paid per class
- Arrival Time: 20 min before classes to login, not compensated
- Raises: You do a good job, you get a raise
Present - 2016
- Senior Instructors: Watches one or two instructors, no compensation
- Hours: 9 classes, 120 teaching hours (won't be paid for meetings, watching others classes, prep work, and extra classes during the intensives period of Summer and Spring)
- Arrival Time: 1 hour before classes to take the " break" that we are suppose to get by law
- Raises: Pay freeze overall. Only raises to those who had lower pay compared to others.
